Williams says he's returning
but misses week of classes

BY JOHN FAY
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Charles Williams is enrolled at the University of Cincinnati. But he did not attend the first week of classes.

Williams left word with the men's basketball coaches office he plans to return to Cincinnati.

His mother, Patricia White, confirmed that.

''He had some obligations here (in Los Angeles),'' she said. ''He's taken care of them. Now he plans to go back.''

By missing so much time, Williams could put his academic standing in jeopardy.

''It's bad,'' said Nancy Hamant, the UC faculty representative. ''It's a 10-week quarter. Students do that, but it makes it difficult.''

Meanwhile, the Williams' situation at UC is still not resolved. It has been five weeks since he was not allowed to play. UC is investigating the circumstances surrounding Williams' tuition payment of junior college-level classes taken last summer.

''I thought it all was resolved,'' White said. ''I spoke to (UC Athletic Director) Mr. (Gerald) O'Dell last week. But he didn't have much information.''

O'Dell said three weeks ago that the investigation was nearly complete. O'Dell was out of town and unavailable Friday.

UC President Dr. Joseph Steger did not return calls.

''I talked to the president today (Friday),'' Hamant said. ''He said they were close to finalizing the report.''
