Sophomore guard John Carson produced his first double-figure game, scoring 12 points in 18 minutes. He made two three-point shots and committed only one turnover.
But on one sequence he decided not to attempt a straight-on layup and instead passed to Brent Petrus along the baseline. UC turned the ball over.
Coach Bob Huggins said UC players are playing too much for the benefit of the crowd. ''I tried to tell him, they would have cheered if you made the layup.''
Big plans
The Bearcats look like they're booked for Thanksgiving the next two seasons. They are headed to the Great Alaska Shootout in 1998, along with Fresno State and Duke, and are just about set for the Big Island Invitational in Hawaii in 1999. That tournament drew Top 25 clubs Stanford and Oklahoma this season.
Injury report
Starting point guard Michael Horton played only 19 minutes against Morehead State, leaving the game in the second half with three turnovers, four steals and an injury to his right foot.
Guard Shawn Myrick, who has a stress fracture in his left foot, is not practicing and did not play.
Up next
Alcorn State visits Shoemaker Center for an 8 p.m. game Wednesday. The Bearcats' current stretch of three games in eight days - Morehead State (No. 288 in last season's RPI), Alcorn State (247) and Wright State (265) - could well be the weakest since they played Robert Morris, Austin Peay and Chicago State in succession in 1993-94.
