Bobby Brannen thought he heard the public address announcer state that he'd just broken the school record for consecutive free throws. He heard right.
Then he shot wrong.
Brannen made his first seven free throws Saturday against Wright State to break the school mark set by Gary Yoder in the 1976-77 season. The record was broken with a single free throw at the 14:29 mark to complete a three-point play.
Brannen was fouled again with 13:50 left, but missed the first of two foul shots.
''I knew I had it, and I relaxed I guess,'' he said.
Brannen surpassed the string of 26 consecutive free throws recorded by guard Darnell Burton between 1994-95 and 1995-96 with his first two.
Getting the point
Junior Michael Horton was back in at point guard after a one-game hiatus from the starting lineup, and he contributed some strong defensive play. Near the end, coach Bob Huggins said, Horton faded because he was tired.
Horton recovered from his benching to pass for nine assists in UC's victory against Alcorn State. Saturday, Horton passed for six assists and turned over the ball twice, giving him an assist - turnover ratio of nearly 4:1 for his past two games.
''I think he's getting better all the time,'' Huggins said. ''I thought he took much better care of the basketball. His decision-making is better."
Myrick back
For the first time in three games, junior guard Shawn Myrick was in uniform. He entered the season as UC's primary backcourt backup, but has been out since Nov. 21 with a stress fracture in his foot. He could be available for UC's next game.
