Former University of Cincinnati basketball star Dontonio Wingfield appeared Friday in Hamilton County Municipal Court as an unemployed assault suspect facing a $35,000 bond.

Mr. Wingfield, 24, of Albany, Ga., pleaded not guilty at his arraignment to accusations that he resisted arrest and broke a Forest Park police officer's finger after police arrived to break up a domestic dispute.

Police were called after Mr. Wingfield allegedly knocked over a table at girlfriend Kristina Cornett's home. After police arrived, Mr. Wingfield grabbed Ms. Cornett's arm and then struggled with officers, police said. Officer Rick Jones suffered a broken finger.¾p„ Mr. Wingfield, a forward, was a second-round NBA draft pick in 1994 after one collegiate season. He was waived this year by the NBA Portland Trail Blazers.

"He does not have a lot of money," his attorney, Hal Arenstein, told Hamilton County Municipal Court Judge Guy Guckenberger in arguing for a low bond.

Later in the day, Mr. Wingfield made bond, and was headed to Georgia to stay with his mother until the next court appearance, Mr. Arenstein said.

In 1993 when he was a UC recruit, Mr. Wingfield tore up the kitchen of his mother's house because she wouldn't let him borrow her car. When police arrived in that case, he kicked two arresting officers. A grand jury is scheduled to decide whether he will be indicted in the current case by Aug. 24. Police have charged him with two felony counts of assault on a police officer, and misdemeanor charges of domestic violence and resisting arrest.
