Speedy tailback will pick UC

BY TOM GROESCHEN
The Cincinnati Enquirer

The University of Cincinnati football team is set to sign a tailback who in 1998 was the fastest high school athlete in Ohio — before a knee injury ended his season.

Dave Harris of Cleveland Brunswick High School, the defending Division I state champion in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes, told the Cleveland Plain Dealer he plans to sign with UC.

Harris, one of the most highly recruited athletes in his school's history, had been pursued by the Michigan State, Wisconsinand Pittsburgh. But he tore his right anterior cruciate ligament during his 1998 season opener, prompting several colleges to cool their interest.

Rich Nowak, Harris' coach, said Harris has rehabilitated the knee and is running “consistent 4.4s” in the 40-yard dash. Nowak said he had called several colleges to let them know.

“I told them that somebody was going to get a steal,” Nowak said.

Harris (5-foot-10, 190 pounds) totaled just more than 2,700 yards and 35 touchdowns over his sophomore and junior seasons.

UC cannot comment on recruits until receiving their letters of intent, which as of Friday, it had not received from Harris.

“I probably ... most definitely ... will sign with Cincinnati,” Harris told the Plain Dealer.
