Loyer officially named coach at Wabash Valley
The Associated Press
John Loyer, a former University of Cincinnati assistant basketball coach fired over problems that drew NCAA scrutiny, was hired Wednesday as head coach at an Illinois junior college.
Loyer was hired at an annual salary of $32,200 for the upcoming season at Wabash Valley College in Mount Carmel, Ill.
Loyer is the 15th head coach at the Illinois school. He succeeds Rick Hughes, now the coach at Lee University in Cleveland, Tenn. Wabash Valley's Warriors were 19-13 last season.
In November, the University of Cincinnati fired Loyer from his job as a top assistant to Bearcats coach Bob Huggins.
Loyer's dismissal came after an investigation found widespread violations in the school's basketball program, leading the NCAA to conclude there was a lack of institutional control over the program. The NCAA put Cincinnati on two years' probation, took away three basketball scholarships over two years and restricted recruiting.
The NCAA accused Loyer of unethical conduct for initially providing misleading information to investigators. The NCAA also said Loyer arranged for point guard Charles Williams to be enrolled in a summer course on the next-to-last day of the session to meet academic requirements so he could play immediately on Cincinnati's 1996-97 team.
