Arrest led to Land's dismissal

University of Cincinnati basketball player Eugene Land was arrested for shoplifting Tuesday night, leading to his dismissal from the team Thursday.

According to a Hamilton County Sheriff's Office report, Land was observed selecting merchandise from displays at Dillard's department store at Kenwood Towne Centre and concealing the items in an Abercrombie & Fitch shopping bag.

When Land left the store, he was stopped by store security and police were called. The report said Land had obtained approximately $256 in merchandise, including underwear, socks and polo shirts.

Land, a product of Roger Bacon High School, is scheduled to make an appearance in Hamilton County Municipal Court at 1 p.m. Aug. 31.

UC coach Bob Huggins dismissed Land from the program for at least the fall quarter. Huggins would not comment Friday on Land's arrest.

“There's not much more for me to say,” Huggins said.

UC Athletic Director Bob Goin said he supports Huggins' action.

“It's a privilege to play basketball for the University of Cincinnati,” Goin said. “If you don't do what's right, we're going to take that privilege away from you.”

Land, 19, could not be reached for comment.

Huggins said Land will keep his scholarship but will not be permitted to participate in preseason workouts, conditioning drills or team practices that begin Oct. 15. If he meets criteria established by Huggins for his return — including daily study halls and attending every class — he may rejoin the Bearcats when the winter quarter begins. He cannot play at least until the fall term ends Dec. 12.

Land, a 6-foot-7 sophomore forward, averaged 3.2 points and 1.7 rebounds as a freshman last season. His playing time diminished late in the season, as coaches cited his lack of effort and inattention to detail.
