Kenner shines in UC scrimmage

The Cincinnati Enquirer

Quarterback Deontey Kenner threw for 127 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for another score Saturday, leading the University of Cincinnati offense in an intrasquad scrimmage.

The offense and defense played to a virtual draw, with the offense scoring six times and the defense forcing eight turnovers. Most of the turnovers were committed by the backup offensive units.

Kenner completed 9-of-17 passes with no interceptions, and Tony Smikle caught both of his touchdown passes.

“Deontey did a nice job running the first offense and he didn't commit any turnovers,” UC coach Rick Minter said. “Cutting down on turnovers is one of our offensive goals this year.”

Other offensive leaders were No. 1 tailback Robert Cooper (20 carries, 78 yards) and fullbacks P.J. Mays (22 carries, 52 yards) and Lloyd Garden (8 carries, 48 yards, two TDs). Top receivers were Rueben Dunbar (five catches, 73 yards) and Smikle (five catches, 70 yards, two TDs).

The defense was led by the secondary, as Blue Adams, Bobby Fuller, Frank Lang and Antonio Smith each intercepted passes by backup quarterbacks. The defense also recovered four fumbles.
