UC's Johnson will be eligible

Cincinnati basketball recruit DerMarr Johnson will be declared eligible by the NCAA this week to compete as a freshman this season.
Johnson, a 6-foot-9 shooting guard named a McDonald's All-American during his senior year at Maine Central Institute, has been awaiting a ruling from the NCAA eligibility clearinghouse.
There had been Internet reports that Johnson would not be cleared to play and that he would consider joining his former high school coach, Max Good, at UNLV, where Good is now an assistant coach. But Johnson learned Tuesday that the NCAA will clear him to play as a UC freshman.
I just know that he's eligible to play, said Curtis Malone, Johnson's club coach with the Washington-based Team Assault.
UC's Janie Shaffer, assistant athletic director for compliance, said she had nothing official from the NCAA on Johnson's case and did not expect anything until the end of the week.
In the spring, Johnson achieved the necessary test score to be eligible to compete as a freshman. But word had been delayed from the NCAA clearinghouse on his case.
UC ADDS SPORT: UC will announce the formation of a women's crew team at a press conference today.
Crew is not a sport sponsored by Conference USA, but the school expects it can field a team of more than 60 members, which would help in complying with gender equity requirements. UC eliminated men's tennis, men's indoor track and rifle last year to help meet that goal.
The addition of crew will give UC 10 women's intercollegiate sports.
MEN'S SOCCER: Sophomore midfielder Kyle Meador is Conference USA player of the week for scoring the winning goal against No. 7 Connecticut.
