Huggins timeline




        1953: Robert Edward Huggins is born on Sept. 21 in Morgantown, W.Va.

        1972: Huggins is named Ohio Player of the Year as a high school senior while playing for his father, Charles, at Gnadenhutten Indian Valley South High School. It is the third All-Ohio selection for Huggins, who scored 2,438 career points, ranking him seventh all-time in Ohio.

        1974-77: After spending his freshman year at Ohio University, Huggins plays basketball at West Virginia, earning MVP honors as a senior when he averaged 13.2 points per game and tallied 109 assists for the year. He scored 794 points in his 81-game career as a Mountaineer. A two-time academic All American, Huggins graduates from WVU magna cum laude.

        1977: Huggins marries June Ann Fillman in Gnadengutten on August 19.

        1977-78: In his first coaching job, Huggins serves as a graduate assistant to Joedy Gardner while earning his master's in Health Administration at West Virginia.

        1978-1980: Huggins spends two seasons assisting Eldon Miller at Ohio State.

        1981-1982: Walsh College wins the Mid-Ohio Conference Championship and Huggins is named Coach of the Year in the league in just his second season as head coach.

        1982-83: Walsh team goes 34-1, recording the most wins for a team under Huggins' direction. The team wins the Mid-Ohio and NAIA District Championships.

        1984-85: After a year as an assistant at Central Florida, Huggins gets his first Division I coaching job with Akron. The Zips finish with a 12-14 mark, but Huggins is still named Ohio Valley Coach of the Year.

        1985-86: Huggins repeats as Ohio Valley Coach of the Year, winning the conference title and making his first coaching appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

        1989-90: Huggins takes over in Cincinnati after five years in Akron on March 29, 1989, and is named Metro Conference Coach of the Year in his first season. He leads the Bearcats to the second round of the NIT in his first two seasons.

        1991-92: UC returns to the Final Four, finishing the year with a 29-5 record, the most wins in his D-I career. The Bearcats win titles in the Great Midwest Conference regular season and tournament. Huggins is named Coach of the Year in the conference, the state of Ohio, the Midwest by Basketball Times and shares the honor in the nation according to Hoop Scoop.

        1992-93: The Bearcats repeat the pair of Great Midwest titles on their way to the NCAA Elite 8. Huggins is again Great Midwest Coach of the Year, and named National Coach of the Year by Playboy.

        1993: Huggins is a member of the coaching staff for the U.S. World University games Gold Medal winning team. On Dec. 11, the Bearcats down Rutgers in the Shoemaker Center, giving Huggins 100 wins at UC.

        1994-95: UC wins its fourth consecutive Great Midwest Conference Tournament under Huggins.

        1995-96: In the first year of Conference USA, the Bearcats win the regular season and tournament titles before returning to the Elite 8. Huggins is once again voted Coach of the Year in Ohio, and Basketball Times gives him that honor for the Mideast region.

        1997-98: An overtime over Massachusetts in Cleveland, Huggins gets win number 200 at Cincinnati. He is named C-USA Coach of the Year after the Bearcats win the regular season and tournament championships. He is also named National Coach of the Year by Basketball Times.

        1998-99: UC registers its eighth straight NCAA Tournament appearance and 20-win season under Huggins, and he repeats as C-USA Coach of the Year. The Bearcats win the C-USA regular season title, the eight consecutive conference regular season or tournament championship for UC.

        1999: Huggins enters his 11th year at UC with a 247-82 record, and a lifetime mark of 415-154 in 18 years.
