Former Purdue player leaning to Bearcats

Jamaal Davis, a former Purdue player now at Barton Community College in Kansas, says the University of Cincinnati is his top choice among schools recruiting him.

Davis made an unofficial visit to Xavier's practice Wednesday, one day after visiting UC.

The 6-foot-8 power forward said he is averaging about 20 points and 12 rebounds for Barton, 12-0 and one of the nation's top junior-college teams.

Davis said Cincinnati is his “leading school right now.” Among other programs he said are recruiting him: XU, Fresno State, Florida, Louisiana State, Auburn, Kansas State, Louisville and Oklahoma.

“I was in the area (visiting friends) and thought I might as well stop by,” said Davis, who played at Merrillville (Ind.) High. “I like Cincinnati as a city.”

Davis was ineligible to compete at Purdue his first year and sat out the 1997-98 season. He was eligible last season but left school just before Christmas because of a lack of playing time. He averaged 2.8 points, 1.8 rebounds in 12 games.
