Mickeal's hot streak gets rewarded

UC forward is C-USA player of week

Cincinnati Bearcats forward Pete Mickeal became the second UC player this season honored as Conference USA's player of the week.

Mickeal, a 6-6 senior forward, averaged 18.3 points and 10.3 rebounds in victories over Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Boise State and UNLV. He scored in double figures in each of the three games and grabbed 14 rebounds against Boise State and nine against UNLV. He shot .645 from the field.

Mickeal has moved past a difficult start in which he a combined 14 points against Iowa State and Gonzaga and grabbed just two rebounds in the Gonzaga game and against Cleveland State.

“It wasn't a funk. It was sore knees,” said Mickeal, who is bothered by tendinitis. “I've blocked that out of my head. It's still there. It's going to be there the whole year. But once I blocked it out, I'm able to play my game. They're as sore as they were from Day One, but once it's time to play, it's time to play.

Mickeal joins UC teammate Kenyon Martin in being honored by C-USA. Martin was twice named player of the week: Nov. 29 and Dec. 20.
