UC's Martin picks up top defensive honors
BY MIKE DeCOURCY
The Cincinnati Enquirer
MEMPHIS Senior center Kenyon Martin earned his third consecutive C-USA Defensive Player of the Year award, and guard DerMarr Johnson was named the league's freshman of the year. Johnson was joined on the league's all-freshman team by guard Kenny Satterfield.
Martin led the league in blocked shots for the third year in a row and also averaged 1.4 steals and 7.4 defensive rebounds.
He would have been the league's blocked shots champion even if he had failed to get one in his final 10 games.
No player in C-USA's five-year history had won three individual awards before Martin. He could make it four today, when the league will announce its player of the year and coach of the year awards.
Johnson, a 6-foot-9 shooting guard, started every game he played for the Bearcats, sitting out only once because of an NCAA suspension. He averaged 13.0 points and shot .498 from the field and .390 from 3-point range.
Satterfield was recognized as one of the league's top rookies after he led C-USA in assists and averaged 8.9 points and shot .775 from the foul line.
