Martin leads Writers' All-America team

ST. LOUIS — UC's Kenyon Martin got a little good news on an otherwise lousy day. The senior, who broke a leg Thursday in the Conference USA quarterfinals, was chosen for the U.S. Basketball Writers Association's All-America team.

The 6-foot-9 center was joined on the USBWA's first team by forwards Chris Carrawell of Duke, Marcus Fizer of Iowa State and Troy Murphy of Notre Dame, and guard A.J. Guyton of Indiana.

The five are finalists for the Oscar Robertson Trophy for the nation's top college player. The winner will be announced at the Final Four.

On the second team were Courtney Alexander of Fresno State, Chris Mihm of Texas, Scoonie Penn of Ohio State, Morris Peterson of Michigan State and Stromile Swift of Louisiana State.

Jason Gardner of Arizona was freshman of the year.

Finalists for the Henry Iba Coach of the Year award are John Brady, LSU; Larry Eustachy, Iowa State; Mike Krzyzweski, Duke; Mike Mongtomery, Stanford; and Bill Self, Tulsa.
