Tulsa's Shelton has UC friends

BY GEOFF HOBSON
The Cincinnati Enquirer

NASHVILLE — When University of Cincinnati assistant coach Mick Cronin jotted Tulsa forward David Shelton's name on the blackboard Saturday, a shot of recognition went through the room.

“Is that "The Twin?'” some of the guys wanted to know.

Cronin nodded. Shelton, Tulsa's 6-foot-6 jack-of-all-trades sixth man, played against some Bearcats while growing up in Cincinnati's West End and Millville sections. UC forward Ryan Fletcher got to know Shelton's twin brother, Darnell, when he worked for a summer at the Millville rec center.

“David's a little better player,” Fletcher said. “A good player. Very strong. He can do a lot of things well.”

Fletcher may guard him at some point, but 6-9 Jermaine Tate, who doesn't know Shelton, will probably start out on him.

“You can't let him get the ball in the post,” Tate said. “He can shoot from the outside, too, so we want to cut down on his touches.”

Shelton might see old friend B.J. Grove, a 6-11 freshman who figures to get more minutes with the Kenyon Martin injury. They were on the Gamble Middle School team in Westwood and Grove said, “Hey, I might be playing "The Twin,' that would be great. That's what we called them. They look alike, so we had to call them something.”
