UC's Satterfield won't bolt for NBA

Stay in school, scouts tell him

As far as Cincinnati Bearcats coach Bob Huggins is concerned, there is no question where point guard Kenny Satterfield will be playing basketball in the 2000-01 season.

“Satt's not going anywhere,” Huggins said. “Tell people to relax.”

Unlike former teammate DerMarr Johnson, who announced his decision to enter the NBA draft after playing one year at UC, Satterfield returned last week for the spring semester.

Huggins has talked with Satterfield several times since the close of the season about his future with the Bearcats, including as recently as Wednesday, before Huggins left for Los Angeles and the Wooden Awards ceremony.

Earlier, Satterfield told Huggins he wanted to look into his immediate prospects for the draft. “He has talked to a couple people,” Huggins said, “and he's not going anywhere.”

Satterfield was encouraged by NBA personnel people to stay at UC and continue developing his game.

He had an outstanding season as the UC point guard in 1999-2000, leading Conference USA in assists, averaging 9.2 points and 1.2 steals and making the league's all-freshman team.

In UC's final three games, played without Wooden Award winner Kenyon Martin, Satterfield averaged 12.7 points and 5.0 assists. He will be a candidate to succeed guards A.J. Guyton of Indiana and Mateen Cleaves of Michigan State as an All-American.
