UC's Jones injured, out for 8-10 weeks

Antwan Jones, projected as the University of Cincinnati's starting small forward, will undergo surgery on his right foot Monday and could be out eight to 10 weeks.

Jones, a 6-foot-8 junior from Tallahassee (Fla.) Community College, broke his foot in May and had a screw inserted, UC athletic trainer Jayd Grossman said Friday.

“It just didn't heal to the point where we'd like it at this point,” Grossman said. “We didn't think it would withstand three hours (of practice) every day.”

X-rays taken in July showed the foot had not completely healed, but UC doctors hoped it would do so over the next eight weeks.

“It just didn't,” Grossman said. “He did what he was supposed to do. Rest usually will take care of the healing portion of the surgery.”

Jones, who averaged 18.7 points and was a second-team junior college All-American last season, will be on crutches for at least a couple weeks, Grossman said.

The UC trainer said Jones' injury is similar to one suffered by former Michigan State point guard Mateen Cleaves in the preseason last year; Cleaves played his first game of the season Jan.5.

Sophomore Leonard Stokes and junior Immanuel McElroy probably will compete for the starting small forward spot while Jones is out. The 6-6 Stokes averaged 2.2 points last year. McElroy, at 6-4, averaged 21 points and 8.5 rebounds and was a second-team junior college All-American with Tyler (Texas) Junior College last season.
