Huggins honors Fortson, Martin

Former All Americans' lockers retired

Most prominent among the new additions to the University of Cincinnati basketball locker room are two lockers honoring former Bearcats Kenyon Martin and Danny Fortson.

Each locker, enclosed in glass, has a jersey, warm-up outfit, shoes and a plaque listing the player's honors and accomplishments.

“I said after Kenyon got everything he got that we ought to do one of those encased lockers,” UC coach Bob Huggins said.

A criterion was established: A player had to be unanimous first-team All-America.

“Oscar's got a statue,” Huggins said, referring to Basketball Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson. “I was just kind of trying to do it for our era. Guys have a lot of pride here. They know who's been before them. These guys understand the history. I just thought it was the right thing to do.”

In addition to a new large-screen TV and sound system, one wall now has framed pictures of every Huggins-coached UC team. And each locker has nameplates of former players who used that locker.

For example, junior Immanuel McElroy inherited the locker used by Darnell Burton, Ruben Patterson and Pete Mickeal.

“I know Nick Van Exel sat in my seat, and now it's mine,” sophomore Donald Little said.
