Football Notebook
Minter wants what Louisville's got
By John Erardi
The Cincinnati Enquirer
LOUISVILLE The University of Louisville has what the University of Cincinnati seeks: a rabid college football fan base.
I love the crowd (39,233) here, said UC coach Rick Minter. It's rabid and excited about Cardinal football. It's a great environment right now to come into as a fan. It's something we envy that we want in our house all the time.
No doubt, it was a big homefield advantageSaturday.
Once (UL) got going in the second half off the (69-yard) pass completion, it got them (the crowd) back energized again and the crowd began to become a factor.
UC lives on a slimmer margin than UL in football. The Bearcats mighthave been able to generate some fever if they hadn't snatched defeat from the jaws of victory at Wisconsin a victory there would have gotten them a Top 25 ranking but instead they lost and went to Indiana the next week and got blown out.
PEEKING AHEAD: UC defensive end Antwan Peek (Woodward High) had six unassisted tackles and one sack for a 7-yard loss, but he was disconsolate after his team got beat 38-24 by conference foe Louisville.
Our goal was to go to the Liberty Bowl, Peek said. Now we need to forget about the Liberty Bowl and just come out and have our mind focused on having a winning season.
UC (3-4) must go 3-1 the rest of the way to achieve that.
With a winning record, and a top four finish in Confer ence USA, UC is going to a bowl. It will be a challenge. After an off week on Saturday, UC hosts rival Miami and conference foe Alabama-Birmingham. The Bearcats then travel to conference foe Memphis before ending the season at home vs. conference power Southern Miss.
This game today came down to big plays, Peek said. We played the run pretty good we've been playing it pretty good all year but now we have to work on the pass (defense)....Our blitz helped out a lot in the first half.
