UC-Miami Notebook
Fans answer Minter's appeal
By John Fay
The Cincinnati Enquirer
It wasn't the sellout Bearcats coach Rick Minter was hoping for, but it was a record. The UC-Miami game drew a Nippert Stadium-record 32,924 fans Saturday.
The previous record: 32,117, for the UC-Indiana game in 1998. It was also a record for the Miami-UC series, bettering the mark of 30,887 set in 1996.
Special thanks to the fans who came out, Minter said.
It's a great turnout, UC athletic director Bob Goin said, and we put on a good show. I'm very happy.
The weather could not have been better: It was 57 degrees and sunny.
Goin anticipated a good crowd, but the walk-up sales got the record.
It built through the week, Goin said. We knew we were going to have our best crowd. But we didn't know where it was headed.
UC's previous best draw for the season was 23,311 against Army for the opener.
UC made it worthwhile for the paying customers. Saturday's ticket stub is good for half off both remaining home games. The Bearcats play Alabama-Birmingham on Saturday and No.14 Southern Mississippi on Nov.18 at Nippert.
HURTING AT WR: Miami played without wide receiver Sly Johnson. Johnson, Miami's fastest player, warmed up but couldn't play because of the pulled hip flexor he suffered in MU's last game, against Bowling Green.
The RedHawks also lost Ty Buxton, who leads the team in receptions, to a deep thigh bruise in the first quarter.
It would have been nice to have Sly and Bux, quarterback Mike Bath said. But I have confidence in all my guys.
Jason Branch and Chauncey Henry, who came in with one catch between them, played most of the game, along with starter Eddie Tillitz. Tillitz had six catches for 52 yards, Branch had four for 50 yards and a TD, and Henry had two for 41 yards.
