Freshmen raise eyebrows in scrimmage
By Michael Perry
The Cincinnati Enquirer
The University of Cincinnati's two freshmen put up some impressive numbers at Saturday's intrasquad scrimmage at Shoemaker Center.
Rod Flowers, a 6-foot-8 forward from Huntsville, Ala., collected a game-high 13 rebounds. He also had 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting. This is the best Rod's played, coach Bob Huggins said.
Field Williams, a 6-3 guard from Houston, Texas, had a team-high 18 points, hitting five of six from 3-point range.
UC's final stats showed a 67-62 victory for the Black team, led by Steve Logan (24 points on 9-of-14 shooting), Donald Little (18 points, seven rebounds, seven blocks) and Flowers. Logan made all four of his 3-point attempts.
We've got a long way to go, Huggins said. Nobody knows what they're doing.
We wanted to get officials out here so they have a little bit better idea what's going to be called and what's not going to be called, and we've got to start playing a little bit more to get in better shape.
Kenny Satterfield and Jamaal Davis each had 13 points for the White team. Satterfield was only 4-of-17 shooting and had eight assists and five turnovers. Immanuel McElroy added 10 points and three steals.
DOWN AND OUT: Sophomore Leonard Stokes went down early in the scrimmage after getting poked in the eye going for a rebound. He did not return.
SIGN HIM UP: When Stokes went out, Keith LeGree knew he was going to be pressed into action. The former UC point guard, now an assistant coach, had to play the majority of the scrimmage because the Bearcats had only nine players suited up.
I haven't been playing, so I kind of felt uncomfortable at first, LeGree, 28, said. You preach it and you teach it, now you've got to show it. It was fun, though. Good exercise.
LeGree finished with three points, 10 assists and six turnovers.
RECRUITING UPDATE: Recruits Keith Langford (6-4, SG, Crowley, Texas) and Hiram Fuller (6-9, PF, Wabash Valley College) had front-row seats behind the New Jersey Nets' bench Friday night, watching the NBA exhibition game with Satterfield, Logan and Little.
Fuller is finished visiting schools. He said he will choose between Cincinnati and Fresno State.
I'm going to take that whole week (Nov. 8-15) and think about everything ... and just see where my heart goes, Fuller said. I'm not going to listen to anybody from the eighth to the 14th. That's going to be my time. The 15th is when everybody's going to get their answer.
It was Fuller's mother who told the Fresno Bee that she would not sign a letter of intent unless her son chose Fresno State. Fuller said, however, that he remains open to UC.
My mom, she loves Fresno State, he said. I'm not going to knock my mom at all. I love her with all my heart. But it's where I'm going to school. It's going to be my future. I'm going to talk to her over the phone and let her know how I feel.
... Fresno and UC, they're both good schools coached by Hall of Fame coaches. I've got a lot of love for Fresno State, and I've got a lot of love for here, too.
Langford is scheduled to visit Kansas this weekend. He said he will make a decision after that trip.
I had a lot of fun, he said. People are showing me a lot of love. I've gotten to know the players real well ... and Coach Huggins. I took real well to everybody in the short amount of time I had.
I'm feeling real good (about UC). I've still got Kansas to go. You can't let emotional highs decide where you're going to go to college.
LOOKING AHEAD: UC's first exhibition game is Saturday (8:05 p.m.) against the California Southeast All-Stars. Its roster includes Rumeal Robinson, the former Michigan star, Curtis Staples (Virginia), Roy Hairston (Purdue) and Ashante Johnson, who was recruited by Xavier before choosing Kansas. The All-Stars play Wednesday at Louisville, Thursday at Kentucky and Friday at XU.
