Huggins' hard practices translate to effort

DAYTON - Monday and Tuesday were not what you'd call fun days at practice for the University of Cincinnati players.

Coach Bob Huggins did not take kindly to the Bearcats' lack of effort and execution in Saturday's 69-51 loss to Notre Dame.

        His point got across.

“We played 10 times harder today,” sophomore Leonard Stokes said after UC's 82-75 victory over No.24 Dayton Wednesday night.

“After the last two days, if they wouldn't have played hard, they wouldn't have had a pulse,” Huggins said.

The mood of the team changed when the final buzzer sounded. Junior Steve Logan called the Notre Dame defeat “embarrassing” but said the team worked out its woes in practice.

“It's been rough,” Logan said. “When you lose around here, it's like you lost your life. If you don't feel like that, Huggs is going to make you feel like that.”

LINEUP CHANGE: Junior Immanuel McElroy got his first Division I start in place of point guard Kenny Satterfield, who entered 5:01 into the game.

“It was my fault,” Satterfield said of his benching. “I didn't go as hard as I should've in practice.”

Satterfield totaled 20 points, eight rebounds and seven assists in 31 minutes; he still played the second-most on the team.

“I don't think he has (practiced hard),” Huggins said. “It's who finishes games. It's always been that way. I've never started our best guys.”

DEE-FENSE: Stokes guarded Dayton star Tony Stanley most of the second half. Stanley scored 14 of his team-high 21 points in the first half.

“He likes to use screens,” Stokes said. “He'll run and try to set you up. So I knew whatever way he went, he would come back the opposite way off the screen.”

BIG BREAK: UC does not play again until Dec.11, at home against Oakland.
