DAYTON, Ohio — UD Arena had been rockin' all night long. But with 50.5 seconds left, it got so quiet the small contingent of University of Cincinnati fans could be heard chanting, “U-C, U-C.”

Sophomore Kenny Satterfield was going to the foul line to ice the game. His two free throws put the 22nd-ranked Bearcats ahead by seven points.

“I looked up and saw some seats were empty,” Satterfield said. “I knew we had the game. ... A lot of people in here probably thought it was over for us.”

UC went on to beat No.24 Dayton 82-75 Wednesday night, rallying from a 13-point second-half deficit before a sellout crowd of 13,553.

The Flyers (2-2) made just two field goals in the final five minutes. They led 69-68 with 3:50 left, then were outscored 14-6 the rest of the way.

“This was a big step for us,” UC junior Steve Logan said. “We came together as a family tonight. We played as a team. We helped one another.”

UC (3-1) has won 10 straight against Dayton, which was playing its fourth straight ranked team — a first in the program's history — to open its season.

“This was a disappointing loss because we were in control of the game,” UD coach Oliver Purnell said. “The positive thing we take from this is that we played hard. But the other side of that equation is playing smart, and we didn't play smart.”

The Bearcats trailed 56-43 with 12:54 to play, then scored nine straight points to begin a 21-4 run. When Logan nailed his second consecutive 3-pointer with 6:50 remaining, he gave the Bearcats a four-point lead.

Dayton regained the lead it held for much of the night, 67-66 on two Tony Stanley free throws with 4:28 remaining. David Morris made two free throws with 3:50 to put Dayton ahead by one point again.

The Flyers did not make another field goal until 17.8 seconds remained. By then, it was too late. UC had pulled away with an 11-2 run. During that span, Stanley missed two foul shots, and Brooks Hall made just one of two. Both players could have tied the game. Neither did.

Logan, who had mostly struggled over the first three games, led the Bearcats with a season-high 21 points on 8-of-19 shooting, including 5-of-11 from 3-point range. He also had three assists and no turnovers.

Satterfield — who said he did not start because he had not practiced hard — came off the bench to add 20 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Leonard Stokes scored a career-high 16.

The Bearcats finished with 17 assists and just six turnovers and forced 19 Dayton turnovers.

“It helped us, definitely,” Stokes said of the victory. “We came in the locker room, and everybody was happy and excited. We just wanted to come out here and play hard for 40 minutes, and I think we did that.”

“I think it's a start,” UC power forward Jamaal Davis said. “We have a long season ahead of us. We have to keep getting better and better.”
