Bearcats using down time to learn

Jones, freshmen catching up during break

By Michael Perry
The Cincinnati Enquirer

The University of Cincinnati is in the midst of it biggest gap between games of the season, and coach Bob Huggins hopes to bring the 22nd-ranked Bearcats (3-1) up to speed during this 12-day off period.

Coming off Wednesday night's 82-75 come-from-behind victory at Dayton, UC does not have another game until Dec.11, when it plays host to Oakland. The players have final exams this week.

“We're going to try to get caught up,” Huggins said. “We're going to try to get Antwan Jones caught up as much as we can. We're going to try to get the new guys caught up. Hopefully we can put the rest of our repertoire in so we can do more things.”

Jones, who had foot surgery Oct.2, has averaged 11.7 minutes since returning one game into the season. He is averaging almost five points but is just 6-of-17 from the field and 2-of-11 from 3-point range.

The 6-foot-8 junior scored nine points against the Flyers, including a big 3-pointer early in the second half after Dayton went ahead by 10. Jones tipped in a Donald Little miss in the first half, and his short runner in the lane tied the game with 8:28 remaining.

“I think he's fine,” Huggins said. “He just doesn't know what he's doing.”

Jones said he is trying to get in shape and learn the plays. Picking up the UC system has been harder than he expected.

“The time I was out, there was a lot of stuff he went over,” Jones said. “I had a chance to sit there and watch, but I didn't have a chance to be in there.”

He also said he is favoring his right foot when he gets into games, so much so that his left foot began to hurt and had to be checked out by team doctors. Jones has not missed any practice time.

“I'm just taking it one day at a time,” he said. “I'm not going to rush everything. Right now, every time I get in the game I'm thinking about my foot instead of just playing basketball. That's what happens when you get injured.

“I'm trying my best (to put it out of my head). It's hard. It's really hard.”

UC's 10th consecutive victory over Dayton went the way Huggins might have thought the Bearcats would play early in the season, with his three perimeter players leading the way.

Steve Logan (21), Kenny Satterfield (20) and Leonard Stokes (16) combined for 57 of the Bearcats' 82 points, not to mention 17 rebounds and 12 assists.

Logan scored 20 or more for the sixth time in his UC career.

“When you're the veteran guy, you're supposed to make shots,” Huggins said. “I thought he and Satt played very well together. They really played off each other very well. They got each other shots. I thought Leonard was really good. Those three guys were really good; that has to happen for us.”

In addition to Jones, this is a crucial period for freshmen Rod Flowers and Field Williams, who have seen fewer than 10 minutes each. Neither played vs. Dayton.

“It's really big for them, but it's big for everyone else, too,” Huggins said. “We've got guys that know one thing, but they don't know everything. What was so good about a year ago was Kenyon (Martin) knew every spot, (Jermaine) Tate knew every spot, and Pete (Mickeal) knew every spot, and we put them in different spots for different things. That's what we're going to try to do with these guys.”
