Jones' whereabouts a mystery to Huggins

By Michael Perry
The Cincinnati Enquirer

MILWAUKEE — University of Cincinnati coach Bob Huggins kept throwing his hands in the air as the questions were asked before Wednesday night's game at Marquette. Where is Antwan Jones?

“He didn't come to practice (Tuesday),” Huggins said. “He didn't get on the bus (to the airport). He's not here. I haven't talked to him. I don't know (why).”

Nor did Huggins know whether to expect to see Jones today when the team returns to Cincinnati and begins practicing for Louisville (3 p.m. Saturday).

Jones, a 6-foot-7 junior forward, was at practice Monday. Huggins said he spoke with Jones afterward but had no indication he would not show up Tuesday.

Jones, who had foot surgery Oct.2, is averaging 6.5 points and 2.1 rebounds in 12 games. He was playing 13.8 minutes a game.

But he is coming off his best back-to-back games, averaging 10.5 points on 8-of-15 shooting against Toledo and Charlotte. He also grabbed six rebounds, was 3-of-4 from 3-point range and averaged 17 minutes in those games.

Jones has been playing mostly power forward in recent games.

DEE-FENSE: UC did a nice job on Marquette senior Brian Wardle, who came in as the No.4 scorer in Conference USA at 18.3 ppg. He was held to seven points on 2-of-10 shooting. Steve Logan, Leonard Stokes and Immanuel McElroy all took turns guarding Wardle.

“I was struggling a little tonight,” Wardle said. “When I did get a couple open looks, I didn't knock them down. They played a great defensive game on me. Logan did a real good job. It's a team game. I love that other guys stepped up and made big plays.”

NOTABLE NUMBERS: UC center Donald Little has blocked 18 shots in the past six games. ... Stokes has not shot 50 percent from the field since Dec.16 at UNLV when he went 7-of-12. Since then, he is 14-of-45 (.311) over seven games. ... UC had just 10 assists and 13 turnovers against Marquette.

TOP ROOKIES: Former Bearcat Kenyon Martin, the NBA's No.1 overall draft choice, is expected to be named today to the Rookie Challenge team, which will match second-year players and rookies from this season in a game during NBA All-Star game festivities.

Martin is a starting forward for the New Jersey Nets.

UP NEXT: Cincinnati plays at Louisville (5-10, 1-1 C-USA on Saturday (3 p.m.).
