UC Notebook

McElroy makes most of start

By Michael Perry
The Cincinnati Enquirer

LOUISVILLE — UC coach Bob Huggins used his seventh starting lineup of the season Saturday against Louisville, going with Immanuel McElroy at small forward and B.J. Grove at center instead of Leonard Stokes and Donald Little.

McElroy, getting his fourth start, finished with eight points on 3-of-3 shooting and a career-high eight rebounds. He also nailed his first 3-point attempt of the season.

“I went to the boards hard,” McElroy said. “Coach emphasized that to everybody the last few days.”

That was the most re bounds by a UC small forward since Stokes grabbed eight against Alabama (Dec.22).

“Mac was really good,” Huggins said. “He was really good defensively. When our small forward rebounds the ball, we're a whole lot better. (McElroy) had a great practice, and I thought he deserved to start. Leonard's been a little tentative, although I thought Len was good today.”

JONES MEETING: Huggins said the earliest he would meet with Antwan Jones is Monday because he was going recruiting right after Saturday's game. Jones left the team Tuesday but told the Enquirer on Friday night that he wanted to talk with Huggins and rejoin the Bearcats.

Huggins said Friday that the decision to allow Jones to return may belong to the players. Some of their thoughts:

Junior Steve Logan: “Since I've been here, nobody's quit for this long. It's up to Coach, really, what he wants to do. It's on him. I don't have a comment.”

Junior Jamaal Davis: “He'd be a big plus to the team, so I would vote for him. He can do so many things for us that the team needs — scoring and rebounding and helping us win.”

Sophomore Leonard Stokes is also in favor of Jones' return: “This is his future, going to school and playing basketball. We've just got to meet up and discuss it. We don't really know too much of the details about what happened.”

COME AND GO: Jones may return, but the Bearcats are going to lose Antwan Peek for a while. The football defensive end, who joined the basketball team, is scheduled to undergo arthroscopic surgery Tuesday to repair a cartilage tear in his right knee.

“It's been real sore,” Peek said. “I just had to play through it, because you've got to take some pain. It's been hard, though.”

Team orthopedic surgeon Angelo Colosimo, who will perform the operation, said Peek might be back in a couple of weeks.

“A lot of it depends on what we find when we get in there,' Colosimo said. “If it's worse than we think, it may be longer.”

Peek said he intends to return to the basketball team.

NOTABLE NUMBERS: Grove tied his career high with six points. He has averaged 5.3 points, on a combined 7-of-12 shooting, and 4.0 rebounds over the past three games. ... This is the first time Louisville has lost four straight games at Freedom Hall (Dayton, Oregon, Kentucky, UC). ... With Stokes coming off the bench, Davis is the only Bearcat to start all 15 games.

UP NEXT: UC plays host to Alabama Birmingham at 8:05 p.m. Wednesday at Shoemaker Center.
