Houston frontline productive
By Michael Perry
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Houston comes to Shoemaker Center tonight riding its first two-game winning streak of the season.
The Cougars, the lowest ranked team in Conference USA in the Ratings Percentage Index (218), are coming off victories over Saint Louis and Tulane. However, they are 1-10 on the road.
The University of Cincinnati can't afford a slip-up. The Bearcats (8-5) are tied with Charlotte and Southern Mississippi for fourth place in the league's overall standings, one game behind Memphis, Marquette and South Florida (all 9-4).
Houston (7-18), led by first-year coach Ray McCallum, could pose problems for UC inside like many opponents.
Freshman center Alton Ford, a 6-foot-9, 270-pound McDonald's All-American, scored a career-high 24 points and had nine rebounds Monday. Forwards George Williams and Patrick Okafor, both 6-8, combine to average 23.9 points and 15.6 rebounds.
I think their frontline is terrific, UC coach Bob Huggins said. They're young, so they make some mistakes at times, but they're really talented.
They've got great size. They're athletic and Ray makes them play hard. They'll probably try to throw it inside against us; everybody else has.
