UC, NKU to play exhibition

It's only an exhibition. But the men's basketball series between the University of Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky University will be renewed this coming season.
There's a verbal agreement for a preseason game in early November — the date hasn't been set — at UC's Shoemaker Center.
“It's great exposure for our program,” NKU coach Ken Shields said. “And it'll be a fun thing for our kids to play UC before a big crowd in the Shoe. I appreciate the opportunity.”
Ten players on NKU's roster this winter were Greater-Cincinnati natives.
“NKU is a very good Division II program that's real close by, and it'll give our players some real good competition,” UC assistant coach Dan Peters said.
This is the second season in which NCAA Division I members can schedule lower-division NCAA schools in preseason. NKU discussed a game last season with Dayton but couldn't agree on a date.
“We'll tell our kids, "Let's understand we will probably not play another team of this talent level the rest of the season,'” Shields said. “But it'll be a good yardstick to understand what we have to do to get better.”
The schools had seven regular-season meetings in the 1980s. UC won them all. The largest margin was 18 points. UC won 60-58 in the 1983-84 season and 56-52 the following season. The last game was 75-63 in the '88-89 season, Shields' first at NKU and the last before Huggins came to UC.
Of note: NKU beat Xavier in the 1977-78 and '78-79 seasons.
Peters said UC's other exhibition game will be Nov.17 against defending Division II national champion Kentucky Wesleyan, which competes with NKU in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
