UC recruit fatally shot after party

Suspected gang member arrested in L.A. incident

By Neil Schmidt
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Ricardo Robledo, a University of Cincinnati football recruit, was fatally shot early Sunday in his Los Angeles-area hometown of Wilmington.

“It's shock and disbelief for us,” UC coach Rick Minter said. “Our thoughts immediately leave football and turn to the family out there.”

Robledo, an offensive lineman from Harbor Junior College in L.A., was leaving a party when he accidentally bumped a suspected gang member, according to police. The unidentified youth and at least one other person began throwing bottles, and Robledo got in his car to leave but one of the bottles hit his girlfriend.

When Robledo got out of his car, one of the youths shot him. A 17-year-old boy suspected in the shooting was taken into custody.

The 6-foot-2, 270-pound Robledo, named honorable mention JUCO All-American by J.C. Grid-Wire, signed a scholarship agreement with UC in early April, just after the end of the last national letter-of-intent signing peri od. Minter said he planned Robledo to begin as the top backup for a center or guard position.

Robledo, just 10 weeks from leaving the hardscrabble Harbor area, was so thrilled about his future that he downloaded a picture of the university from the Internet, wrote his departure date over it and taped it to his bedroom door.

“He was a class individual, a guy who was going to rise above his neighborhood,” Minter said. “We'll miss him joining our family here.”
