Wyoming star Hall now a Bearcat

Expected to report today, eligible for '02

By Tom Groeschen
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Richard Hall, former Wyoming High School football star and one of the biggest names in Greater Cincinnati prep history, is scheduled to report with UC newcomers when fall orientation begins today.

. Hall originally signed with Ohio State entering the 1999 season, but never played for the Buckeyes because of academic deficiencies.

UC coach Rick Minter declined comment Tuesday, but sources near the program confirmed that UC anticipates Hall on campus today.

Hall, a tailback, will sit out the 2001 season as a transfer from another Division I-A school. He will practice with UC this year and then have two years of eligibility remaining, beginning with the 2002 season.

Hall rushed for 7,376 yards and 121 touchdowns at Wyoming, where his final season was 1998. At the time he graduated, Hall's yardage and touchdown totals both ranked among the top 20 in American prep football history.

Hall could not be reached for comment Tuesday. It is unclear why and when he left Ohio State, but UC checked and found Hall established academic “residency” at OSU that would enable him to transfer.

Minter today also will welcome another of the most explosive offensive stars in Tristate prep history.

Gino Guidugli, the former Highlands High School quarterback, also reports today. Guidugli threw for 4,367 yards and 51 touchdowns last year as Highlands won the Kentucky Class AAA state title.

Minter said there is a wealth of talent among his 2001 newcomers, with the program coming off a 7-5 record and Motor City Bowl appearance.

“We've got a good, solid freshman class,” Minter said. “We've got a lot of guys we're excited about.”

UC veterans return to campus Saturday, with the first full-squad workout Monday.

The Bearcats open with defending Big Ten champion Purdue on Sunday, Sept. 2 at 2:30 p.m. at Nippert Stadium. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN2.
