6-8 guard to visit UC

Goin: Little's status unchanged

By Michael Perry
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Armein Kirkland from Tyler, Texas, who will make an official recruiting visit to the University of Cincinnati this weekend, is listed by some recruiting sites as a power forward. Larry Jones, Kirkland's coach at Robert E. Lee High School, has a clarification.

“He plays point guard for us,” Jones said. “He's a guard. He will play (point) or (shooting guard) in college. He's got to get much stronger, but he has God-given size and the quickness and ball-handling skills to go with it.”

Kirkland is 6 feet 8. He averaged 16.5 points, seven rebounds and 6.5 assists last season and already has qualified academically to compete as a college freshman, Jones said.

Kirkland has visited SMU and heard from Texas Tech, Colorado, Tulsa, Baylor, Tennessee, Kansas, Texas, New Mexico State and Boston College. He is ranked No.65 in the country by ESPN.com but is not rated in the top 100 by CNNSI.com, BlueChipHoops.com or Bob Gibbons' All Star Sports Report.

NO WORD ON LITTLE: Classes begin today at UC. Former Bearcat Donald Little said Wednesday that he is not registered but will “probably be in class Friday.”

The 6-11 center was dismissed from the basketball program in May. His status has not changed, athletic director Bob Goin said Wednesday night. Little said he met Wednesday with Goin and coach Bob Huggins.

“They did (the talking),” Little said. “I just sat back and listened.”

Goin said Huggins is back on the road recruiting and that the two plan to meet again Friday.

Little was charged with misdemeanor assault from a May 3 incident but pled guilty to a lesser charge of persistent disorderly conduct. He was charged May 19 with speeding in a work zone, driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under a suspended license and possession of marijuana.

The marijuana charge was dismissed. Little pled guilty to reckless driving, having an open container of alcohol and not having a driver's license in his possession when stopped by police.
