UC Notebook
Martin, Big'O' share spotlight
By Michael Perry
The Cincinnati Enquirer
The two most decorated players in UC history were in attendance at Shoemaker Center for Midnight Madness: Oscar Robertson was honored near midcourt, and Kenyon Martin, who was in town to play an NBA exhibition game Saturday night.
Senior Steve Logan led all scorers in UC's scrimmage with 24 points and his White team won 59-38. Junior Leonard Stokes led the Black team with 16 points. Nobody else scored in double figures.
Sophomore Field Williams defeated Logan in a 3-point shooting contest by one shot, and freshman Jason Maxiell won the slam-dunk contest.
RECRUITING UPDATE: Keith Butler, a 7-foot center from Celestial Prep in Philadelphia, was at UC's Midnight Madness, Saturday's practice and Saturday night's New Jersey-Cleveland NBA exhibition game.
Butler said he plans to make official recruiting visits to Temple, Illinois, North Carolina and Miami before announcing his decision.
I'm kind of wide open, he said. This trip is going well. ... I've liked (UC) for a long time, especially when Kenyon was here.
HONORING GRANDMA: Sometime this week, Logan plans to have his grandmother, Shirley Logan's, face tattooed onto his stomach. Shirley Logan became ill during the NCAA Tournament in March, prompting Logan to fly from San Diego to Cleveland for a day to see her. She died April 10.
Sometimes I don't realize that she's gone, Logan said. I always think I can call back home and Grandma's going to answer the phone. And it's weird when I go home; there's a space missing there. This season is really for her. Whatever goes on out on the court, I'm always thinking about her.
