Satterfield makes Denver roster

The Cincinnati Enquirer

Former Cincinnati Bearcat Kenny Satterfield beat out Omar Cook, another rookie, for third point guard with the NBA Denver Nuggets behind former Bearcat Nick Van Exel and veteran Avery Johnson.

“Barring injuries, I don't anticipate him playing a lot the next year or two,” Denver coach Dan Issel said Friday. “But I told Kenny, this is a marvelous opportunity for him, because he's going to be able to observe and learn behind two of the more intelligent point guards in thisleague. They're good players, but they both really know how to play the game.”

The 6-foot-2 Satterfield, who left UC after his sophomore season, could end up on the injured reserve list.

Issel said “it would be hard to separate” Satterfield and Cook.

“In the final analysis, what really worked in Kenny's favor is he came out early and he worked with us before training camp even opened,” Issel said. “And Omar, because of a contract situation, was about a week late getting into training camp and he was never quite able to make that week up. That was basically the difference.”

Satterfield signed a one-year guaranteed contract worth about $332,000, the Rocky Mountain News reported; Cook did not have a full guaranteed deal.

Satterfield was drafted No.54 overall by the Dallas Mavericks in June but was traded to Denver. He played in three of the team's first seven exhibition games and totaled four points on 2-of-9 shooting in 28 minutes. He was 0-of-3 from 3-point range and had five assists, two turnovers and two steals.

“For the sporadic playing time that he's gotten, he's showed us he can shoot the basketball,” Issel said. “What he has to work on more is, if he's going to be a point guard in this league, to worry a little less about scoring and learn how to run a basketball team.”
