Valerie King's 3-pointer with 19 seconds to play was enough to boost the Bearcats at Murfreesboro, Tenn.
The Bearcats (3-0) led 32-27 at halftime, but MTSU (1-2) shot 57.1 percent in the second half to keep the game close. The lead changed six times in the final 3:18.
Freshman Debbie Merrill led UC with 19 points and nine rebounds; King scored 15 points, and Tammy Douglass added 13 points and nine rebounds.
UC outrebounded MTSU 39-28.
