UC notebook
Little off mark for double-double
By Michael Perry
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Donald Little has been joking in postgame press conferences about his inability to collect a double-double (at least 10 points and rebounds), because he has been so close.
On Saturday, he had nobody to blame but himself. And he knew it.
I couldn't buy a free throw, he said. It's on me, really.
The UC center finished with eight points and 10 rebounds in the Bearcats' 74-41 victory over Duquesne, but he missed all five of his foul shots.
It was the fourth consecutive game he has had at least 10 rebounds or points.
I'm going to get it next game, he said. Trust me.
FAST START:
It didn't take long for Steve Logan to get going Saturday. The senior guard scored six of UC's first nine points and had 13 at halftime against Duquesne.
Logan had made just three of 14 first-half field goals over the previous two games. He was 5-of-8 shooting in the first half against the Dukes. He finished with 22.
NOTABLE NUMBERS:
Logan moved past Damon Flint and Levertis Robinson and into 15th place on UC's all-time scoring list (1,323 points). ... Over the past three games, senior forward Jamaal Davis has averaged 9.0 points and 9.7 rebounds. ... Sophomore Rod Flowers grabbed a career-high five rebounds in six minutes. ... Freshman Jason Maxiell tied his career high in points (eight) and collected a career-high eight rebounds.
FAX FALLOUT:
Illinois coach Bill Self told the Chicago Sun-Times that it was irritating to be mentioned in a fax from UC to the Philadelphia prep school of recruit Keith Butler.
The Sun-Times said the fax called Self a good guy/coach but asked how many NBA players he had recruited or developed, while noting UC had eight in the league.
Technically, what he said about me is not wrong, Self told the newspaper. When he said "recruited and developed guys in the NBA,' he's probably pretty accurate. I've coached 11 guys in the NBA and been a key part of their development, but some were as an assistant coach or as a head coach who didn't recruit them. I haven't been at a place long enough to recruit them and see them through their four years.
Self mentioned how his Tulsa team eliminated UC from the 2000 NCAA Tournament. He said of the fax, I don't think it was in good taste, but I don't think it had any bearing on where the kid went to school.
UP NEXT:
The Bearcats play host to Coppin State at 6:05 p.m. next Saturday.
