UC climbs to No. 10 in AP poll

By Michael Perry
The Cincinnati Enquirer

        The University of Cincinnati Bearcats say they are more concerned about their status in March.

        But here is where they stood Monday:

        • No.10 in the latest Associated Press Poll;

        • No.7 in the Ratings Percentage Index;

        • No.1 in the Sagarin Ratings.

        “We're not really worrying about how we're ranked until the end of the season,” senior Immanuel McElroy said. “But it's a great feeling. We've just got to keep up the hard work. We want to be No.1, and we've got a lot of things to do better to be No.1.”

        UC puts its 13-game winning streak — longest in the nation — on the line tonight against Charlotte at Shoemaker Center (8:05 tipoff).

        The 49ers, picked in the preseason to finish second in Conference USA's American Division behind Cincinnati, are 7-5 and coming off an upset of then-No.25 Marquette on Saturday.

        The Bearcats (13-1) were 10-point victors at East Carolina Saturday — the closest any opponent has come to beating them since a season-opening loss at Oklahoma State on Nov.16.

        UC is ranked No.2 in the country in scoring defense, allowing 55.6 points a game (Pittsburgh is first at 55.5), and No.3 in scoring margin (plus-22.7), behind Oklahoma and Florida.

        “We've cracked the top 10, but as a team we think we're far from done yet,” junior Leonard Stokes said. “We can make a lot of improvements offensively and defensively.”
