Long-distance shooting gets foes nowhere

By Michael Perry
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Entering Wednesday night's game against DePaul, the University of Cincinnati's defense against the 3-point shot had been stifling during Conference USA play.

Houston was 2-of-17 (.118), Charlotte 3-of-19 (.158) and East Carolina 3-of-22 (.136) from behind the arc.

That's a combined 8-of-58. The Blue Demons were 7-of-16 (.438) in their 89-72 loss to UC.

“I think we're hard to shoot over,” UC coach Bob Huggins said. “(Immanuel) McElroy and (Leonard) Stokes are good athletes, and they've both got good size and they're both long.”

With veterans on the perimeter, Huggins said, the Bearcats can make more defensive changes during a game.

        REPORTER IN:

Cincinnati Post reporter Jason Williams, who was told his credential was being revoked for two games, showed up Wednesday night to cover the DePaul-UC game but was not asked to leave Shoemaker Center.

Williams had been banned from Shoemaker until Monday because of a public argument with Huggins last Thursday.

“He's here,” UC Athletic Director Bob Goin said. “We asked him not to come for two games and then come back in full status. I thought he would respect our wishes and be accountable for his actions. It's over as far as I'm concerned. We're not going to be non-professional, that's for sure.”

Said Williams: “I just came to do my job in a professional manner like I always have. It's a dead issue.”

        SHOE, SWEET SHOE:

Stokes was coming off his best game on the road (19 points at Houston), but he still seems to favor Shoemaker Center.

He scored a career-high 36 points against DePaul and has averaged 16.9 points in UC's home games and 9.9 on the road.

        LOGAN'S LISTS:

Senior Steve Logan, who keeps climbing the career scoring list (he is 10th), moved into fifth place in career assists with 349. Only Logan and Oscar Robertson are in the top five in scoring and assists.

        LONG GONE:

Antwan Jones, who left UC after one season unhappy with his role, is the leading scorer for NAIA power Georgetown (Ky.) College (20-0), averaging 18.3 points a game.

Jones also is the team's No. 3 rebounder (5.2). He is averaging 27.9 minutes and shooting 52.1 percent from the field and 42.3 percent from 3-point range. In a Dec.30 victory over Purdue-Calumet, Jones scored 30 points and was 8-of-13 from 3-point range.

        CATCHING UP:

Former Bearcat Pete Mickeal has reached an agreement with the Kansas City Knights of the ABA, a team spokesman said. The contract is expected to be finalized today.

        UP NEXT:

UC plays host to Louisville (11-4, 2-2 C-USA) at 2 p.m. Saturday at Shoemaker Center (CBS). The Cardinals lost at East Carolina 87-77 on Wednesday night.
