McElroy needs to score at draft camp

By Michael Perry mperry@enquirer.com
The Cincinnati Enquirer

CHICAGO — A couple NBA officials didn't want to say much. They were only vaguely familiar with Immanuel McElroy — not enough to talk about him in detail. The former University of Cincinnati Bearcat is among more than 60 players participating in this week's NBA pre-draft camp at Moody Bible Institute. McElroy is one of those guys trying to catch the attention of NBA folks.

“This is a great opportunity to put himself on the radar screen,” Milwaukee general manager Ernie Grunfeld said. “He's a very competitive guy. He's very strong, and he's a very good defender.”

McElroy was Conference USA's Defensive Player of the Year and was for two years an unselfish, team-oriented Bearcat.

Now he has to prove he can shoot from the perimeter and create his own shot.

“He's a really good defender; he's a hard-nosed kid,” Denver Nuggets scout Greg Bittner said. “He runs the floor well and is very athletic, which intrigues teams.”

In his first game Wednesday night, McElroy played both guard positions. NBA teams want to see him at point guard, too.

He finished with four points on 2-of-5 shooting, six rebounds and two assists.

Here is the consensus on McElroy: He will not get selected in the NBA draft, but he should be invited to play in an NBA summer league with the opportunity to show his stuff.

“I think he'll get in some one's camp in the summer and play — and you never know,” said Tony Ronzone, director of international scouting for the Detroit Pistons. “It's good he's here, because there a lot of European scouts here.”

McElroy, 6 feet 4, averaged 9.5 points and 5.2 rebounds for the Bearcats as a senior. His junior season, he averaged 7.0 points and 3.3 rebounds.

McElroy did not take spring quarter classes at UC, instead going to Houston to work out.

He said he has yet to work out for NBA teams but might do so for Houston and Denver.

“(NBA teams) already know I can play defense,” McElroy said. “They want to see me score and make good decisions. Basically all the stuff I put aside (at UC), I've got to show them.”
