Steve Logan never had an individual workout for Golden State. But that didn't stop the Warriors from making the University of Cincinnati's All-American guard the 30th pick first in the second round in the NBA draft Wednesday night.
They tried to get him out there, said Cedric Howard, an assistant to Logan's agent, Mike Strickland. It never happened. We never could get the dates right because the matchup they wanted was (Gonzaga's) Dan Dickau against him. All they did was a psychological (test) over the phone. I'm not really (surprised). They were one of the first teams I talked to. I've talked to them since May.
We're very happy where he went. I think it's a place where he can play. We can probably go in and get two years of guaranteed money.
Logan, 22, watched the TNT telecast with roughly 50 friends and family members at his apartment in Westlake, a Cleveland suburb.
After he was picked, he was called immediately by Golden State officials. He said he would leave for California today.
It was a nervous moment, said the 5-foot-10 Logan. Some draft experts weren't sure he would be picked in the two rounds because of his height. I had faith. I just waited. It was all worth it.
"It was a shocking moment that Golden State picked me. It's a great situation for me. I know I've got to go out there in top-notch shape and ready to go.
Former Bearcat Danny Fortson is on Golden State's roster.
This is the sixth consecutive draft at least one UC player was selected.
One of the best shooters that they had in Chicago (at the NBA predraft camp), TNT analyst Hubie Brown said of Logan. ... He's got all of the pumps and moves. The main thing is, can he adjust to being posted by bigger players? Can he defend at the position so he does not get run over at that size? But offensely, terrific.
Added Missouri coach Quin Snyder, also working the TNT telecast of the draft: He might be the most skilled guard in the draft. There isn't really anything he can't do. He just seems to win all the time.
Logan was first-team All-America as a senior and is a two-time Conference USA Player of the Year. He finished his career as Cincinnati's No.2 all-time scorer behind only Oscar Robertson.
