Dec.28 matchup should interest fans

The University of Cincinnati and Miami University will resume their men's basketball series Dec.28 at U.S. Bank Arena.
The schools have not met since Jan.10, 1997, when the Bearcats won 91-61 at Shoemaker Center. They first played in 1903-04.
There's been some (fan) interest in playing (Miami), UC athletic director Bob Goin said. It's good for our program. I think we can generate some interest. That's part of our deal, to give the fans what they like to see.
We'll see how it works. We've got to try these things. We'll try it and see how people respond to it. If it's good for the community, then we've got to at least give it some considerations.
Goin said it is a one-year deal. UC had success in March in winning the Conference USA Tournament at U.S. Bank Arena, and that event returns in 2004. So, it doesn't hurt the Bearcats to be acquainted with the building, Goin said.
This year we've got a lot of home games, Goin said. It just kind of worked out well. This is a good fit.
UC has not yet released its non-conference schedule. Goin did confirm the Bearcats will play in the Jimmy V Basketball Classic on Dec.17 at Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford, N.J. The opponent has not been finalized, but it's expected to be Oregon.
Miami coach Charlie Coles said his team gets to face area schools Xavier, UC, Dayton and Wright State. The UD game is Dec.4 at Millett Hall., the XU game Dec.9 at Cintas Center.
I don't know how we'll do (against UC), but it's exciting for us, Coles said. It's a good thing because we get to play against the best. It ain't fun once you get on the floor with them, but it looks good now. The last time we played them, they beat us up pretty good. They had Superman. That's what I called Danny Fortson.
