UC can't host recruits at PB Stadium

The University of Cincinnati is playing host Saturday to perhaps the biggest home football game in the program's history, yet the Bearcats will not be allowed to provide complimentary tickets to recruits or high school coaches.
NCAA rules permit a maximum of three complimentary admissions to a campus athletic event for visiting recruits. Saturday's game against No. 6 Ohio State is at Paul Brown Stadium, which is off campus.
There is another rule that allows schools to provide up to three tickets to one home game considered outside the community. But because Saturday's game is within 30 miles of UC's campus, the NCAA told UC officials it would not be considered outside the community.
UC athletic officials became aware of the rule a month ago and appealed to an Administrative Review Subcommittee but found out Monday the appeal was denied, said Brian Mand, senior associate athletic director for academics, compliance and student services.
The bottom line is all of these are rules that the membership puts in place and even the interpretations are approved by the membership, NCAA spokesman Wally Renfro said. Normally when you see a decision like this, it means a membership committee has looked at circumstances similar to this and have agreed with the interpretation.
Bearcats football coach Rick Minter said his program would have played host to at least 50 recruits and their friends or family members.
It's extremely disappointing, Minter said. What's so sad is if we go to Cleveland and play these guys on a neutral site and call it our home game, we can recruit, and you can't do it two minutes from here? That's a bunch of malarkey.
The other people who suffer are the area high school coaches. We wanted to satisfy the needs of our area coaches to show they are very, very important to us. And to see that they've been forbidden to go down there on our "comp' list, so to speak, is very disappointing.
PEP RALLY: A Bearcat rally will be held from noon-12:30 p.m. Saturday on Fountain Square. The UC cheerleaders, dance team and mascot will perform.
POSTER GIVEAWAY: United Dairy Farmers, the presenting sponsor for Saturday's game, will distribute commemorative posters to the first 10,000 fans.
