Southern Miss suspends starting tackle

Will miss UC game Saturday

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Mississippi tackle Jeremy Bridges was suspended for Saturday's game against Cincinnati for an undisclosed violation of team rules, Golden Eagles coach Jeff Bower said.

Bridges, a senior, has started every game for the Golden Eagles the last three seasons.

The 300-pound tackle was a preseason all-Conference USA selection after being chosen second-team all-conference after last season.

The Golden Eagles (4-2, 2-0), who have lost two of their last three but are tied for first in Conference USA, will have a new starting quarterback against the Bearcats.

Dustin Almond will start Saturday, replacing Micky D'Angelo, the Golden Eagles' starter for the first six games.

Almond replaced D'Angelo in the first quarter of last Saturday's 16-13 loss at South Florida.

"We don't have any plans to rotate, and we will just play it by ear," Bower said. "(Almond) deserves the start because he played well."

Almond was 24-of-39 for 258 yards and a touchdown against the Bulls. He did not throw an interception. D'Angelo was 2-of-4 for 10 yards in the first two series.
