C-USA zeroes in on commissioner

Conference USA has offered its commissioner's job to Big 12 Conference associate commissioner Britton Banowsky, a source confirmed to The Enquirer on Wednesday.
Negotiations are taking place, and an announcement could come within the week, the source said.
Mike Slive, C-USA's only commissioner since the league's inception in 1995, left in July to become commissioner of the Southeastern Conference. Brenda Weare has been acting as C-USA's interim commissioner.
C-USA assistant commissioner Brian Teter said he spoke Wednesday with Charlotte Chancellor Dr. James Woodward, who denied reports out of Fort Worth, Texas, and Houston that Banowsky was offered the job. Woodward is chairman of the league's board of directors.
There has been no offer made as of today, so I don't know where the report came from, Teter said. They're in the final stages with their final candidate pool. (Woodward) just said the goal is still to get this done within the next couple weeks.
UC President Dr. Joseph Steger, who is chairman of the search committee, declined comment Wednesday.
Banowsky is a graduate of the University of Oklahoma College of Business (1983) and College of Law (1986).
He is a former Southland Conference commissioner and Southwest Conference assistant commissioner.
Banowsky did not return a phone call Wednesday.
