Profiles of UC football recruits



The University of Cincinnati signed 19 high school and two junior college football players to national letters of intent Wednesday. A look at each:

Terry Arnold, 5-10 190 Fr. RB, Tallahassee, Fla. (Lincoln H.S.):

High school: First-team all-state pick by the Florida High School coaches as a senior. . . . carried 87 times for 857 yards and 10 touchdowns and caught 15 passes for 253 yards and five scores as a senior, helping team to a 12-1-1 record and the semifinals of the state playoffs. . . two-time all-region choice. . . honorable mention all-state selection as a junior when he was also tabbed as the squad's most improved player. . . lettered once in track, owning a best of 10.9 in the 100 meters.

Jeremy Bolton, 6-5 305 Fr. OL, Burlington, Ky. (Conner H.S.):

High school: First-team all-state pick by the Louisville Courier-Journal as a senior. ... helped team to a school-record 8-3 mark as a senior, advancing to the first round of the state playoffs. . . named to the Northern Kentucky "Top 24" by the area coaches and to the all-city team by the Cincinnati Enquirer. . . was a second-team all-state choice by the Associated Press. . . received the team's Mr. Connor Award, which goes to the top athlete on the team. . . earned all-district, All-Northern Kentucky and Kentucky Post All-Star accolades as a junior and senior. . . lettered three times in football.

Digger Bujnoch, 6-4 265 Fr. OL, Cincinnati (Elder H.S.):

High school: Second team all-district choice as a senior. . . helped team to a 14-1 record and the Ohio Division I state title. . . named to the all-city squad by the Cincinnati Enquirer. . . first-team all-league choice as a both a junior and senior. . . lettered twice in football and basketball.

Brent Celek, 6-4 240 Fr. TE, Cincinnati (LaSalle H.S.): High school: First-team all-district pick as a junior and senior. . . caught 19 passes for 384 yards and a pair of touchdowns, including a school record 89-yard TD grab. . . made 29 tackles, including a pair for losses, on defense. . . voted the team MVP as a senior. . .three-year starter who twice earned all-league honors. . . lettered twice in track, owning a personal best of 59'6" in the shot.

Angelo Craig, 6-5 205 Fr. DE, Cleveland, Ohio (Glenville H.S.):

High school: First-team all-league choice as a senior. . . made 21 solo and 32 total tackles with four quarterback sacks as a senior. . . two-way starter who made 10 catches for 210 yards and a touchdown as a senior. . . earned three letters in football, four in basketball and two in track. . . played first two years at John Hay High before transferring to Glenville for junior campaign. . . first-team all-league choice as a junior in basketball. . . competes in long and high jump in track.

Mike Daniels, 5-7 185 Fr. WR, Cincinnati (Princeton H.S.):

High school: Named the state offensive player of the year as a senior. . . started at quarterback, completing 191 of 355 passes for 2,564 yards and 19 touchdowns as a senior while also rushing 244 times for 1,387 yards and 24 scores. . . first-team all-state choice by the Associated Press and was tabbed as the city player of the year by the Cincinnati Enquirer. . . finished third in the Mr. Football balloting in Ohio. . . set school records for TD passes in a game (5) and touchdowns in a game (5) along with season marks for passing attempts, completions, yards and total offense (3,951). . . honorable mention all-state honoree as a junior after completing 175-of-290 passes for 2,360 yards and 21 TD's while also rushing 220 times for 998 yards and 16 scores. . . totalled 2,385 yards rushing and 4,924 yards passing in two seasons at Princeton, averaging 335.8 yards of total offense per game as a senior and 395.1 as a junior. . . played his sophomore year at Woodward High, rushing for 986 yards and throwing for 1,095 yards. . . started prep career at Lockland High as a freshman in 1999, rushing for 1,100 yards. . . finished with career totals of 6,019 yards passing and 4,471 yards rushing in his four seasons. . . in addition to four letters in football, has lettered three times in both track and basketball. . . has a personal best time of 10.9 in the 100 meters and a 4.40 in the 40.

Cedric Dawley, 6-1 210 Jr. WR, Lynwood, Calif. (Compton C.C.):

Junior college: First-team all-conference as a sophomore. . . caught 43 passes for 823 yards and six touchdowns, helping team to a 6-4 record. . . second-team all-league pick as a freshman after making 31 catches for 587 yards and four scores as part of an 8-2 team that appeared in the Western States Conference Bowl.

High school: Second-team all-dream team choice by the Los Angeles Times as a senior at Lynwood High. . . caught 51 passes as a senior, including seven for touchdowns, to earn first-team all-area honors. . . led league with seven interceptions as a junior to earn team defensive MVP and second-team all-area honors. . . lettered three times in football and twice in track.

Chris Flores, 6-2 230 Fr. DL, Wheaton, Ill. (Wheaton Warrenville South H.S.):

High school: First-team all-state selection as a senior. . . named the league's defensive lineman of the year after making 66 tackles with eight quarterback sacks, 26 tackles for loss, 14 QB hurries, three caused fumbles and a pair of fumble recoveries. . . first-team all-state choice by the high school coaches and second team by the Chicago Tribune. . . named to the all-area teams by the Wheaton Leader, the Wheaton Sun and the Daily Herald. . . received the team's Don S. Gardner Award, which is given to the player who combines athletic skills with character, leadership and citizenship. . . team MVP. . . honorable mention all-area choice as a junior after making 65 tackles with a pair of sacks, 12 tackles for loss and eight QB hurries. . .totalled 167 career tackles with 10 sacks, 43 TFL and 27 hurries. . . lettered three times in football and wrestling.

Derrik Haithcock, 6-1 230 Fr. LB, Hillsboro, Ohio (Hillsboro H.S.):

High school: Special mention all-state choice as a senior. . . made 117 tackles with three fumble recoveries as a senior enroute to earning team most valuable linebacker honors. . . received the squad's Steve Johnson Award for his leadership ability. . . named to the all-district and all-league units. . . special mention all-state as a junior when he also received team most valuable linebacker and first team all-conference honors. . . lettered four times in football and basketball and once in track.

Doug Jones, 6-4 275 Fr. TE, Erlanger, Ky. (Dixie Heights H.S.):

High school: First-team all-city choice as a junior. . . missed his entire senior campaign with a torn ACL in his knee. . . caught 32 passes for 352 yards and seven touchdowns as a junior, helping team to a 9-3 record and the second round of the state playoffs. . . also made five sacks with 48 tackles while playing as a defensive end. . . named to the Northern Kentucky All-Star teams by the Cincinnati Enquirer and Cincinnati Post. . . first-team all-conference as a sophomore despite missing a good portion of the season with an injury. . . lettered three times in football and baseball and twice in basketball. . . earned all-district honors as a junior in basketball. . . hit .385 with four home runs and 45 RBI as a junior and .365 with 7 HR and 62 RBI as a sophomore.

Jordan Lear, 6-5 215 Fr. P-K, Zanesville, Ohio (Zanesville H.S.)

High school: First-team all-state honoree as a punter by the Associated Press as a senior. . . kicked 44 times for 1,795 yards and a 40.8 average. . . also made 4 of 5 field goal attempts and 21 of 22 extra points, including a 53-yard kick. . . 68 percent of kickoffs went for touchbacks. . . first-team all-region and all-district pick as a junior after averaging 38.0 yards per punt. . . earned two letters in football, three in soccer and four in basketball. . . second-team all-district pick as a goalie in soccer as a junior and played on team that went to Elite Eight round of state playoffs as a sophomore. . . special mention all-state honoree as a junior in basketball, averaging 16 points and eight rebounds a game.

Greg Moore, 6-2 210 Fr. RB, Dayton, Ohio (Trotwood-Madison H.S.):

High school: First-team all-region honoree as a senior. . . carried 101 times for 1,104 yards and 15 touchdowns as a senior while adding 56 tackles with six quarterback sacks and four forced fumbles. . . earned first-team all-district and all-conference accolades. . . named team MVP and second team all-conference as a junior when he picked up 560 yards on 85 carries as a junior, scoring four times. . . lettered four times in football.

Jon Newton, 6-3 270 Fr. DT, Cincinnati (Roger Bacon H.S.):

High school: First-team all-state honoree by the Associated. . . voted league defensive lineman of the year. . . three-time member of the all-league and all-city teams, earning first-team honors as junior and senior and second-team as a sophomore. . . second-team all-state choice as a junior. . . earned four letters in football and three in basketball.

Clint Parks, 6-3 205 Fr. WR,

Decatur, Ga. (McNair H.S.):

High school: Two-time all-county. . . helped team to a 10-3 record and the quarterfinals of the state tournament. . . started season at wide receiver but moved to quarterback early in the year. . . completed 58-of-118 passes for 890 yards and 13 touchdowns and caught 30 passes for 625 yards and four scores as a senior. . . voted the team's Coach's Award which is given to the player who makes the most contributions to the team. . . selected for the 100% Wrong Club which honors the top prep players in the Atlanta area. . . received the team's top receiver award as a junior after helping team to an 8-3 record and the first round of the state playoffs. . . lettered four times in football and three in basketball. . . honorable mention all-county choice as a sophomore and junior in basketball. . . is currently averaging 20.5 points and 10.7 rebounds a game.

Bill Poland, 6-3 180 Fr. WR, Cincinnati (Elder H.S.):

High school: First-team all-state as a senior. . . caught 60 passes for 1,391 yards with 13 touchdowns, helping team to a 14-1 record and the Ohio Division I state title. . . all-around performer for the team, averaging 22.1 yards on 26 kickoff returns while also punting 45 times for a 39.0 average. . . voted the league's player of the year. . . made 32 catches for 714 yards and 15 touchdowns as a junior and a pair of catches for 59 yards and two TD's as a sophomore. . . totalled 94 career catches for 2,164 yards and 30 scores. . . lettered three times in both football and basketball. . . tabbed as the team's best defender as a junior in basketball.

Jordan Roth, 6-2 270 Fr. DT, North Canton, Ohio (Hoover H.S.):

High school: First-team all-league and all-county choice as a senior. . . honorable mention all-district selection after helping team to an 8-3 record and first round of state playoffs. . . started at offensive guard and defensive tackle as a senior. . . lettered three times in football, earning special mention all-county and all-district accolades as a junior. . . played on teams that compiled a 28-8 record with three appearances in the state playoffs. . . five-time recipient of the team's Big Stick award, which is given for the defensive play of the game.

J.P. Simon, 6-6 300 Fr. OL, Massillon, Ohio (Washington H.S.)

High school: Special mention all-state choice by the Associated Press as a senior. . . received the team's Ducky Schroeder Award, which goes to the top offensive lineman on the team, after helping team to a 10-2 record and the semifinals of the state playoffs. . . first team all-county choice by the Massillon Independent, the Canton Repository and the Akron Beacon Journal. . . received the team's weightlifting award as a junior after finishing second in a competition. . . lettered twice in football.

Todd Spitzer, 6-5 220 Fr. QB, Greer, S.C. (Hillcrest H.S.):

High school: First-team all-region choice as a senior. . . completed 85-of-150 passes for 813 yards and five touchdowns. . . played first three seasons at Parkland High in Allentown, Pa. .. . completed 71 of 132 passes for 706 yards and seven touchdowns as a junior, helping team to a 9-4 record and the upper state finals.

Hannibal Thomas, 6-3 205 Jr. WR, Englewood, Calif. (Pasadena City College):

Junior college: Honorable mention All-America selection by JC Gridwire as a sophomore. . . named to the all-state team after making 54 catches for 769 yards and eight touchdowns as a sophomore . . . owns a best time of 4.55 in the 40. . . ranks second in school history with 88 career catches (1,176 yards). . . moved into the starting lineup for the final two games of his freshman season, making 18 catches with five touchdowns in that span. . . finished the year with 34 receptions for 407 yards and five scores. . . played basketball as a freshman, averaging 4.1 points and 2.0 rebounds a game as a reserve.

High school: First-team all-city choice as a junior and senior at East Los Angeles Lincoln High. . . recipient of the Kenny Washington Award as a senior, which is given to the top prep player in Los Angeles. . . lettered twice in football and three times in basketball. . . averaged 28 points a game as a senior in basketball with a high game of 48 points.

Jon Tobin, 6-3 290 Fr. OL, Lancaster, Ohio (Fisher Catholic H.S.):

High school: First-team all-state choice as a senior. . . two-way starter at beginning of senior campaign before wrist injury limited play to the offensive line. . . four-year starter who earned all-league and all-district honors in each of his last three seasons. . . honorable mention all-state pick as a junior.

Anthony Williams, 6-1 190 Fr. DB, LaGrange, Ga. (Troup County H.S.):

High school: Three-time all-city, all-conference and all-area selection. . . made 265 career tackles, including 92 as a senior, 87 as a junior and 86 as a sophomore. . . spent time as a running back as a junior, gaining 378 yards on 67 carries. . . had six career interceptions. . . lettered four times in football and twice in track.

Craig Worthen, 6-3 210 Fr. DE, Cincinnati (Winton Woods H.S.):

High school: Second-team all-city honoree by the Cincinnati Enquirer as a senior. . . first-team all-league and special mention all-district honoree after leading the team with 58 solo and 73 total tackles, adding 16 tackles for loss, nine quarterback sacks and 16 QB pressures. . . had only four missed tackles all season. . . served as team captain as a senior. . . lettered twice in football. . . will play in the East-West All-Star game this summer.
