Those University of Cincinnati football fans who have been waiting to see more of local products Mike Daniels and Bill Poland might get their wish this week when the Bearcats (2-0) play Temple (0-2) Saturday at 7 p.m. at Nippert Stadium.
"We're going to start playing more wide receivers," UC coach Rick Minter said Thursday.
"I think one of the things that hurts our production at the wide receiver spot is playing our guys too many plays."
One of the few disappointments in the early going for UC has been the play at wide receiver, where starters George Murray, Derick Ross and Kevin Hazel have received the bulk of the playing time, even though they have only 10 receptions among them.
Daniels, from Princeton High School, was Ohio's Division I Offensive Player of the Year last year as a quarterback.
Poland, who played on Elder's Division I state championship team, was first-team all-state.
Both were expected to make an impact as freshmen, but so far Daniels has caught only one pass and Poland has yet to record a reception. They saw limited action in the season opener against East Carolina, and didn't play last week in UC's win over West Virginia.
Poland was unavailable for the West Virginia game because of rib injury, but Minter said he's OK now.
"I still think (Poland) is going to be outstanding here," Minter said.
"It's just learning, maturing and getting opportunities to play."
In Daniels' case, Minter said, "part of it is adjusting to wide receiver, but I think we're going to play him more."
