Connecticut breezes to 11th straight win

The Associated Press

STORRS, Conn. - Emeka Okafor had 27 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks to lead No. 1 Connecticut to a 94-70 victory over Georgetown on Wednesday night.

Taliek Brown had 20 points, seven assists and a career-high three blocks for the Huskies (14-1, 2-0 Big East), who extended their winning streak to 11 games. This is their longest regular-season streak since starting 19-0 in 1998-99, the program's national championship season.

The Huskies have won seven straight over the Hoyas (10-3, 1-3), who dropped their third straight this season. Ashanti Cook led Georgetown with 18 points, while Brandon Bowman and Gerald Riley each had 17. Bowman grabbed 11 rebounds in the first double-double against the Huskies this season.

Okafor anchored a dominating inside game in picking up his 10th double-double of the season and 39th of his career. UConn outscored Georgetown 52-36 in the paint and finished with a 47-31 rebounding edge.

The Huskies got off to a choppy start. Okafor made a quick exit when he was called for a foul in the first 40 seconds. Coach Jim Calhoun, unhappy with the play of most of his starters, pulled all but Ben Gordon in the first 3 minutes and the Hoyas took an 11-10 lead.

That all changed when Okafor and most of the starters returned with about 15 minutes to play. The Huskies got their fast break going off defensive rebounds and steals and went on a 15-0 run with five players scoring. The Huskies shot 63 percent in taking a 56-30 halftime lead.

The Hoyas opened the second half with an 11-2 run but would get no closer than 16 points the rest of the way.
