Nearly a month after he was suspended indefinitely by the University of Cincinnati following his drunken driving arrest, basketball coach Bob Huggins has not been told what criteria he must meet for his return.
"The thing I can tell you is the process is moving forward on his side and on the university's side," UC athletic director Bob Goin said Friday. "That process is under way. I don't know how long that's going to take or when that process will be ready to make decisions with. We need to let the process continue."
Huggins was suspended June 12, following his June 8 arrest in Fairfax.
At the time, Goin said he would make a recommendation to UC president Nancy Zimpher when he believed Huggins was ready to return to coaching.
"There are some things that he wants to do that are more self-generated right now," Goin said. "This process is him stepping back and reflecting on what he wants to do, some of the things he wants to get cleared up. We're having the chance to evaluate things."
Richard Katz, Huggins' attorney, declined to comment.
During his suspension, Huggins, who pleaded no contest to driving under the influence on June 15 in Fairfax Mayor's Court, is being paid his base salary of $185,000.
As part of his suspension, Huggins was ordered by Zimpher to vacate his office and forgo use of his university-furnished automobile. He cannot be involved in recruiting or have contact with UC players.
"He and I have been in contact," Goin said. "Quite frankly, it's been limited. ... It's tremendously delicate. Nobody wrote a book on this. I wanted him to have time away, and that's occurring."
