Minter: No plans to leave

BY TOM GROESCHEN
The Cincinnati Enquirer

University of Cincinnati football coaches have been known to come and go quickly, but Rick Minter is not ready to leave. Not yet.

Minter, 43, has one year left on his original UC contract, which runs through 1998. He is the first Bearcat coach in two decades to post three straight winning seasons, which could make him attractive to another program. But while Minter is frustrated with Nippert Stadium attendance, he does not seem inclined to bolt.

''No one is seeking my services, and I'm not seeking another job at this point,'' he said.

In 1996, UC set a Nippert record with 24,256 fans per game, buoyed by games with rivals Kentucky and Miami. But this year, with no such drawing cards, attendance is averaging only 19,982 despite UC having its best season (6-3) in years.

''I don't know how you couldn't be disappointed with the attendance,'' Minter said. ''I think we put an exciting product on the field.'' UC athletic director Bob Goin said he will talk with Minter after the season. Minter is completing his fourth UC season, and Goin likes the ''continuity'' which would come with Minter staying on.
