Little bowl blue
Boise stadium takes look from NFL Broncos

BY TOM GROESCHEN
The Cincinnati Enquirer

stadium
The blue turf of Bronco Stadium is called Smurf Turf.
The Bearcats will get their first look today at the famous blue AstroTurf in Boise State's Bronco Stadium.

The so-called Smurf Turf is an electric blue, with the end zones painted orange. The color scheme is borrowed from the old Denver Broncos uniform, with Boise State nicknamed the Broncos.

Legend has it that birds sometimes plunge onto the turf, mistaking it for water. Not true, according to Boise State sports information director Max Corbet.

''I knew you were going to ask,'' Corbet said. ''But I've been here 11 years, and no birds have hit the field.''
