A marquee game against the former national champion Miami Hurricanes highlights the University of Cincinnati's 1998 football schedule released Monday.

Miami, which won or shared four national titles between 1983 and '91, will visit Nippert Stadium on Sept. 12, the second week of the season. Miami comes off its first losing season (5-6) since 1979 but is the most decorated program to play UC since the Bearcats faced Penn State in 1992.

UC will complete a home-and-home series with Miami by visiting the Hurricanes in the Orange Bowl in 2001.

The '98 game will mark the first time UC has played Miami since 1989, when the Bearcats completed an eight-year run of playing the Hurricanes. Miami won the final five meetings by an average score of 49-6; UC is 1-9 overall vs. Miami, beating the Hurricanes in 1947.

UC also will have non-league home games against Indiana and rival Miami University, and road games at Syracuse and Army. Syracuse played in the Fiesta Bowl last season, and Army joins UC's Conference USA for football in 1998. The Bearcats last played Syracuse in 1994 and have met Army once, a 22-0 loss in 1963.

''It's an attractive schedule for our fans,'' UC coach Rick Minter said. ''It's a challenging yet opportunistic schedule for us.''

UC comes off an 8-4 season that included its first bowl appearance in 47 years, a 35-19 Humanitarian Bowl win over Utah State.

UC Athletic Director Bob Goin said the Miami game gives UC a big-name opponent without overdoing it. In the 1980s and early '90s UC scheduled as many as three superpowers per year (e.g. Penn State, Auburn, Miami), but scheduled more wisely in recent years.

''You have to offer a good mix, and hopefully we can start filling our stadium,'' Goin said. ''We should sprinkle some Top 25 teams in there, and if you beat them, you can get into the Top 25 yourself.''
